Celebrating World Frog Day

Happy World Frog Day! While it might strike some as an unexpected occasion for celebration, here at Cheeriodicals, we wholeheartedly embrace World Frog Day! Our enthusiasm is rooted in our longstanding practice of tucking a plush frog into each green Cheeriodicals box bound for a children’s hospital.

World Frog Day, celebrated annually on March 20th, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the critical conservation issues facing frog populations worldwide. Established with the aim of highlighting the diverse array of frog species and the threats they encounter, this day underscores the urgent need for conservation efforts to safeguard these amphibians and their habitats. With approximately 6,000 known species and a lineage dating back millions of years, frogs play crucial roles in ecosystems, serving as indicators of environmental health and contributing to various cultural, scientific, and medicinal realms.

Cheeriodicals frogs are included in all of our pediatric patient care boxes, brining big smiles and comfort to children during their hospital stay.

One of our earliest offerings at Cheeriodicals was our children’s Cheeriodical, a happy green box filled to the brim with activity books, puzzles, crafts, toy, and a cheerful green stuffed frog, all intended to provide hours of entertainment for a hospitalized child. Over time, the contents of this particular Cheeriodical have undergone slight modifications, yet one constant remains—the presence of the frog. Intrigued by its significance, I approached Cheeriodicals’ founder, Mary Martha Parisher, with the question, “How did you come up with the idea for the bright green stuffed animal frog?” and I loved the story she shared!

“When we first started creating children’s Cheeriodicals, we knew that a green stuffed animal to match our green Cheeriodicals box was a logical choice. We chose the frog for sentimental reasons.  When our son, Jake, was 3 years old, he was fascinated with a book about the rainforest that featured a lime-green tree frog.  We spent countless evenings discussing (in great detail!) that one tiny green tree frog.  So when we were choosing between all the possible stuffed animal options, the stuffed frog literally ‘jumped’ out at us as the only choice.”

Through our Cheeriodicals events, our stuffed frogs travel all over North America, spreading joy and comfort to children facing challenging times. As we celebrate our cheerful green companions, we’re excited to share some fascinating frog facts with you!

Fun Frog Facts

  • Frogs have excellent night vision and are very sensitive to movement. The bulging eyes of most frogs allow them to see in front, to the sides, and partially behind them

  • Launched by their long legs, many frogs can leap more than 20 times their body length

  • Like all amphibians, frogs are cold-blooded, meaning their body temperatures change with the temperature of their surroundings

  • A frog completely sheds its skin about once a week

  • There is a frog in Indonesia that has no lungs – it breathes entirely through its skin

  • The biggest frog in the world is the Goliath frog.  It grows up to 12.5 inches long and can weigh up to 7.2 pounds!

  • Frogs drink water through their skin.  The water is absorbed through what is known as a “drinking patch” under the frog’s belly and thighs

  • A frog’s tongue can be around 1 inch long.  In human standards, that would make our tongues reach our belly buttons!
